The opening weekend for ACC Softball is in the books. Surprisingly, at the top of the standings is the Virginia Cavaliers, who swept Pittsburgh (3-18) this weekend in Charlottesville by 5-4,7-4, and 5-4 scores. The 3 wins moves UVA to 11-9 on the year. Next weekend, the Wahoos will travel to Georgia Tech.

In second place are the Hokies and North Carolina, both at 2-1 in the ACC. UNC went 2-1 versus the Duke Blue Devils in Durham by 4-2, 8-1, and 1-2 scores. UNC is 11-9 overall while Duke is 10-14.

Top ranked (last week’s poll) Florida State (25-2) will open ACC play this week by hosting Notre Dame (13-7). These two teams were picked to finish 1-2 in the preseason poll, and while Notre Dame has had some surprising losses this year, they head to Florida on a 7-game winning streak. Florida State headed to Arizona undefeated last week, but had a shocking loss to Grand Canyon University and a run-rule loss to #12 Arizona. However, they also defeated Arizona twice. They remain the class of the conference and will probably be #2 or #3 when this week’s polls come out tomorrow.
